Why is January Important?

January is Tax Identity Theft Awareness Month, which marks that it is time of the year to remind ourselves to be extra careful with our personal information. As we start preparing and filing our taxes, scammers also practice activities that might pose consequences and might cause problems later.

What is Tax Identity Theft?

This occurs when someone steals your personal information – like your Social Security number or Tax Identification Number – and uses them to file a false tax return. These offenders will try to get a refund that should have gone to you. Most individuals only find out when their tax return is denied and/or they received a notification about income they don’t seem to be familiar with.

Signs to Watch Out For!

A simple individual can detect of tax identity theft is occurring. Here are the simple signs:

  • Rejected tax even though you haven’t filed yet

  • Receipt of a notice about a job or an income you never had

  • Confirmation of tax information you did not request

If these occurs, take immediate and proactive actions.

Ways to Protect Yourself

You don’t need to be an expert in technology to stay safe. Here are steps that can go a long way:

  • File your taxes as early as possible

  • Store tax personal documents safely

  • Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts

  • Be vigilant in using emails, receiving calls and texts

Keep in mind that real tax authorities do not threaten or rush you through notifications.

What to do if you think you were a victim?

Report the situation right away to authorities. Follow their instructions and keep a keen eye on tour records. Acting quickly and staying calm can fix the problem in a faster manner.

Stay Aware, Stay Protected

Tax identity theft can occur to anyone, but awareness is your best security. This January, take a few minutes to stay knowledgeable and cautious. It’s a straightforward way to protect your money, your identity, and your peace of mind in 2026.
