Introduction:

With all the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, many home builders are starting to wonder—why hire a real accountant when AI tools can do the work? At first glance, it may seem like a smart way to cut costs and streamline operations. But as Jon Markee, your Builder CPA, explains, there are several crucial reasons why AI still can’t replace a human accountant—especially in the construction industry.

AI Setup Isn’t as Simple as It Looks

While the idea of automating your entire accounting system with AI sounds appealing, the setup process can quickly become complicated—particularly for builders who also use job costing software alongside QuickBooks Online. AI may be powerful, but it’s not yet equipped to fully handle the layered complexity of construction accounting without significant customization and oversight.

Frequent Legal and Regulatory Changes

The accounting world is heavily influenced by regulatory bodies like Congress, which can change tax rules or reporting requirements with little notice. AI tools are not always immediately updated to reflect these changes, which could put your business at risk. A human accountant stays informed, interprets new laws, and applies them correctly to your financials.

AI Can Still Be Wrong

An emerging problem is that AI sometimes provides answers that sound confident—but are factually incorrect. Without accounting expertise, it would be nearly impossible for a business owner to recognize when the system is wrong. A real accountant acts as a safeguard, ensuring that the information guiding your financial decisions is accurate.

No Human Insight, Motivation, or Accountability

Even the best AI tools cannot provide accountability, coaching, or strategic insight. Many builders rely on their accountants not only for accuracy, but also for advice, planning, and motivation to stay financially disciplined. AI may process numbers, but it cannot replace partnership, perspective, or encouragement.

Little to No Cost Advantage

Unlike other professional services, construction-focused accounting firms like ours already operate with a low cost structure and pass those savings directly to clients. As a result, switching to AI often doesn’t deliver meaningful cost savings—and could create expensive mistakes that a human accountant would have prevented.

If your end goal is to try AI for accounting, you’re welcome to give it a shot. But for now, most builders still benefit greatly from working with a real accountant—especially when accuracy, compliance, and strategic insight matter. AI can be a helpful tool, but it’s not yet a true replacement for experience and judgment.
